Tipping painters is not a standard expectation in the US — painters are tradespeople who typically charge a set rate that already accounts for their skill and labor. That said, tipping is increasingly appreciated when the work is exceptional, the conditions were difficult, or you want to acknowledge a crew that went above and beyond.
Is Tipping Painters Expected?
No — not in the way tipping a restaurant server is expected. Painting contractors set professional rates and do not rely on tips as a portion of their income. Most painters will be genuinely surprised and appreciative if you tip. A glowing online review, a referral to a neighbor, and cold drinks on a hot day are equally meaningful gestures.
When Tipping Makes Sense
- The crew worked in extreme heat or difficult conditions
- They completed the job ahead of schedule with exceptional quality
- They moved furniture, protected your belongings carefully, and cleaned up thoroughly
- It's a solo painter or small independent operator who gave you a fair price
- The project was more complex or time-consuming than originally scoped
How Much to Tip a Painter

| Full room (average) | $15–$20 per painter | $25 per painter | $30–$40 per painter |
| Exterior single story | $20–$30 total crew | $40–$50 total | $50–$75 total crew |
| Exterior full house | $25–$40 total crew | $50–$75 total | $75–$100 total crew |
| Full interior (2,000 sq ft) | $20–$30 per painter | $40–$50 per painter | $50–$75 per painter |

Tip each crew member individually in cash if possible.

Cash or Check?
Cash handed directly to each painter at the end of the job ensures every person receives their share. If it's a larger crew managed by a foreman, you can give the foreman a total amount and ask them to distribute it — but individual cash is always the more direct and appreciated approach.
Alternatives to a Cash Tip
If tipping feels awkward for a large contractor job, consider: a cold lunch on a long day, beverages in hot weather, a detailed 5-star online review (which genuinely helps their business), or a referral to a neighbor or friend. Small business painting contractors value these as much or more than a cash tip.
