Your DoorDash tip goes directly and entirely to the Dasher who delivered your order. DoorDash does not take a percentage of customer tips.
How DoorDash Driver Pay Works
Dashers earn money from two sources: a base pay from DoorDash (which varies by order distance, time, and desirability) plus 100% of the customer tip. The base pay alone is often not enough to cover fuel and vehicle costs, which is why tips are genuinely important to drivers' livelihoods.
Prior to 2019, DoorDash controversially used tips to offset the base pay — meaning a $5 tip didn't add to the driver's earnings, it just reduced what DoorDash paid. After significant public backlash and media coverage, DoorDash changed this policy. Tips now stack on top of base pay entirely.
Before or After Delivery: Does It Matter?
Yes — timing matters more than most people realize. Dashers see the estimated earnings for an offer (including the tip) before accepting it. Orders with no tip or very low tips are frequently passed over, especially in markets where drivers have plenty of orders to choose from. This can result in slower delivery times as orders bounce between drivers.
The practical advice: tip before delivery at a fair amount. If your driver was exceptional, you can increase the tip afterward. If something went wrong, DoorDash allows tip reductions within a window after delivery.
How Much to Tip on DoorDash
- Standard order: 15%–20% of the subtotal, minimum $3–$5
- Large order ($50+): 15% is fine; don't let the tip balloon disproportionately
- Bad weather: Add $2–$3
- Long distance delivery: Add $2–$3
- Very fast delivery: Acknowledge with 20%+
