How Much to Tip
Movers?

For Local · Short Distance · Long Distance · Cross-Country moves of any size

They carried what you could not. In the heat or the rain.

This tip reflects that per person, for your city.

The US standard is $20–$50 per mover for a local move and $50–$100 per mover for a long-distance or full-day job. Tip each mover individually — not just the crew lead. Use the calculator below for a suggestion based on your move type, duration, and city.

Your Tip Suggestions iHow your city affects these numbers

Our calculator looks up the median household income for your county using US Census data. Higher local incomes mean higher tipping expectations — a 20% tip in Manhattan carries different social weight than 20% in a small rural town.

Example ranges:
Rural ($42K income) → base ~15%
National avg ($74K) → base ~18%
High cost city ($120K+) → base ~22%

The percentage itself adjusts — not just the dollar amount.

How Much to Tip Movers — US Guide

Movers do physically demanding work in all weather conditions. Here's what's standard for every kind of move.

Tip Each Mover Directly

Always tip each mover individually — handing cash to the crew lead doesn't guarantee everyone receives a share. Have separate envelopes for each worker, or hand each person their tip at the end of the job. For a 3-person crew, budget your total tip across all three.

Per Hour Is the Benchmark

The most widely cited guideline is $4–$8 per mover per hour for local moves. For long-distance or interstate jobs, $8–$12 per mover per hour is the norm. Multiply by hours worked, then adjust for complexity, care, and conditions.

Piano and Specialty Items

Piano movers deserve a notably higher tip — typically $50–$100 per mover for specialty item moves. Pianos require specialized equipment and carry significant physical risk. The additional expertise warrants additional recognition.

Weather and Conditions

Moving in extreme heat, cold, or rain is significantly harder. Many clients tip 10%–20% more when movers work in difficult weather conditions. If stairs, long carries, or tight hallways were involved, adjusting upward is appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions — Mover Tips

How much gratuity for movers?

Gratuity for movers runs $20–$50 per mover for local jobs and $50–$100 for long-distance or full-day moves. Use $4–$8 per mover per hour as a starting point and adjust for difficulty, care, and conditions.

How much to tip cross-country movers?

Cross-country moves warrant $75–$100 per mover. If different crews handle pickup and delivery (common for long-distance moves), tip each crew separately at their respective ends.

Do you tip movers if they damage something?

If an item was significantly damaged through clear negligence, it's reasonable to reduce the tip — but don't eliminate it entirely. Minor scuffs happen on almost every move. For serious damage, document it and contact the moving company — a tip reduction alone isn't the right resolution.

Should I tip movers in cash?

Yes — cash is strongly preferred by movers. It's immediate, splits easily among crew members, and doesn't involve processing fees or paperwork. Have envelopes ready at the end of the move with each person's name or simply hand each mover their cash directly.
