Is 10% Too Low?
For most US personal service situations — restaurants, hair salons, rideshare, delivery — yes. The standard floor is 15%, with 18%–20% being the actual norm. Leaving 10% at a sit-down restaurant signals meaningful dissatisfaction.
Ten percent is appropriate when:
- Service was genuinely poor (not just imperfect food)
- You're at light counter service where tipping isn't strongly expected
- You want to leave something after a disappointing experience without rewarding it fully
If you're considering 10% because the meal was disappointing but your server handled it well — tip the server normally and speak with the manager about the food.
