Mental Math: How to Calculate 15% in Your Head
- Move the decimal one place left to find 10%. ($48 → $4.80)
- Divide that by 2 to find 5%. ($4.80 ÷ 2 = $2.40)
- Add them together. ($4.80 + $2.40 = $7.20) — that's 15%.
Is 15% Enough?
Fifteen percent is below the current US standard of 18%–20% for sit-down restaurant service. It was the standard in the 1990s and early 2000s but has since been overtaken. For adequate service, 15% is acceptable. For good service, 20% is more appropriate.
For services outside restaurants — hair salons, rideshare, delivery — 15% is at the low end of acceptable. See: Full US tip guide by service type.
